- Hello, I'm Offred.
- This is Offred. She is the Handmaid in Fred Waterford's household. Her primary role as a Handmaid is to bear children for the Commander and his Wife, which is Serena Joy, who is supposedly infertile. Before Gilead, she was a wife to Luke and a mother to her daughter Hannah. However, since the Republic of Gilead has been established, she has now been stripped of her rights, and serves as a Handmaid.

- This is NIck. He serves as a Guardian at Commander Fred Waterford's household. A Guardian is the lowest ranking title in the Republic of Gilead, and like Offred has been stripped of many of his rights. Later in the book, he secretly has a bit of a relationship with Offred, and he ends up helping her to escape. It is also suspected that he was part of the secret resistance group 'Maydsy'. Serena Joy suspected that the reason that Offred was not becoming pregnant was because of the Commander. So, Nick is the other option for this and ends up being the father of Offred's second child, Nichole.

- I'm Serena Joy.
- Serena Joy is the wife of Commander Fred Waterford. She is (supposedly) infertile and is the Wife in the house in which Offred is the Handmaid for. She is the wife which Offred is supposed to bear a child for. She has one of the most powerful positions in the Handmaid's Tale society. In the novel, Serena Joy is seen as quite rude and inconsiderate, and does not treat Offred (a Handmaid) very nicely - her mind is set on Offred having a child for her.
