Tony and his family immigrated to the Philippines from Southeastern China in search of a better life; he experienced hardships early in his life and this inspired him to help the family earn money. Their family opened a small restaurant in Davao that soon became profitable because of the help of all the family members.
When their family had a stable income from their small business, Tony had able to study at a prestigious school. He graduated from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) with a degree in BS Chemical Engineering.
At the age of 22, he set out to establish his own restaurant after being inspired by a visit to an ice cream factory. Using family savings, he took the opportunity of a franchising opportunity with Magnolia Dairy Ice Cream in 1975 and opened two ice cream parlors, the Cubao Ice Cream House and the Quiapo Ice Cream House.
Following customers' requests, he decided to expand the menu to include hot meals and sandwiches, which quickly became far more popular than ice cream and gave rise to the famous fried chicken that would later be known as Jollibee Chicken Joy.
Three years later, in 1978, he decided to capitalize on this development and discontinue the Magnolia franchise while turning his parlors into fast-food outlets. Jollibee Food Corporation was then founded.
Today, Jollibee Foods Corporation has many propriety brands that are serving great-tasting food all over the world. Furthermore, Tony became the co-chairman of DoubleDragon Properties and he is now one of the richest people in the Philippines.
