A mysterious scene in Chapter 3, relating to Gossip, occurs at Gatsby's party with himself and Jordan. Nick is at Gatsby's party and is with Jordan. Gatsby requests for Jordan to speak with him privately and they do so in a room alone. To the reader, this is not too surprising as they novel has already introduced many scenarios of Gossip going on behind closed doors, only this time it is literally behind closed doors and with Gatsby himself -- who both Nick and the reader are actively trying to learn more about. As many people have already left the party, Nick sees Jordan and Gatsby leave the room together. "[Gatsby] was saying some last word to her, but the eagerness in his manner tightened abruptly..." Just a few moments after meeting Gatsby, the reader already gets a glimpse into his private life. Gatsby trying to sneak a few last words into Jordan's ear, and the abrupt stop in his eagerness, further build the readers suspense. The suspense and mystery both allude to the motif of Gossip, as those two things are what make for "good" gossip.

This scene is significant as Jordan refers to it later in Chapter 4 when Jordan is telling Nick about Gatsby's longing for Daisy. Although we may have not known it then, this is the moment where Gatsby starts reveals his goals. Nick sparks this change in Gatsby, which later further links to the construction of Nick and Gatsby's relationship.
