Okay, class. Its Nono and Nina's turn to debate. Their topic is "are human flourishing and happiness the same?" Nono will argue for it and Nina will argue against it. Let's start!
Succeeding or flourishing in life equates to happiness. Therefore, it is safe to say that human flourishing and happiness are the same.
I see your point, Nina. May I know what is your basis in this argument?
I am afraid I disagree. Yes, happiness does come with human flourishing. However, these two are distinct in their own sense. Hence, these two are correlated but not the same.
So, you are basically saying that they are just the same.
My basis is the philosophy of Aristotle which is The Good Life. According to him, the good life is Eudaimonia. Eudaimonia means 'human flourishing' which is a state of contentment. It means living the life that one was born to live, which brings forth happiness
Of course not, Nono, What I am saying is that human flourishing is distinct to, but related to happiness. When you live a contented life, you become happy. But of course, being contented does not only mean being happy. You have to be satisfied with who you are and what you have. This includes your health, your possessions or situation.
This is why Eudaimonia is also sometimes defined as "a contented state of being happy, healthy and prosperous."
I am afraid to say that you time is up. I would like to say that both did a very good job. However, it was Nina who did the best at proving her point about the relatedness, not sameness of human flourishing and happiness. Congratulations!
