- The Compromise of 1850 allowed California to enter the union as a free state. However, this also came with the Fugitive Slave Act. The Fugitive Slave Act allowed all free former enslaved people to be apprehended and taken back to the South. Abolitionists nicknamed this as "The Bloodhound Bill."

- The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed settlers to vote which repealed the Missouri Compromise. It also allowed for favored sovereignty and created two new areas. This made many anti-slavery and pro-slavery activists have a violent uprising. In this uprising they attempted to redirect the vote.

- Abraham Lincoln won the presidency against Steven Douglas in 1860. He wanted to keep all the states united and also not extend slavery. The South declared succession since they felt like Lincoln was an abolitionist. This made the Democratic party split apart due to the issue of slavery.
