  • Mary Eliza Church Terrell was born on September 23, 1863 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was an African American activist who championed racial equality and women's suffrage in the late 19th and 20th century. She was part of the rising black middle and upper class who used their positions to fight racial discrimination.
  • Who were they involved with?
  • She dedicated herself to racial uplift. She believed that African Americans would be accepted by white society if they received education and job training. She dedicated herself to educating and helping other African Americans. She also supported the black women´s right to vote.
  • What major accomplishments did they make?
  • She brought attention to the atrocity of lynching along with Ida B. Wells. She also fought to end discrimination practices of restaurants in Washington DC, and black women´s rights.
  • What constitutional were made as a result of their involvement?
  • Her involvement in the early civil rights movement began in 1892 when her friend Thomas Moss was lynched by a white mob in Memphis, Tennessee. Along with Ida B. Wells, she brought attention to the atrocity of lynching. She was president of the National Association of Colored Women.
  • She actively campaigned for black women´s suffrage. She even picketed the Wilson White House with members of the National Woman's Party. She fought for civil rights. She challenged segregation in public places by protesting the John R. Thompson Restaurant in Washington DC.
  • In 1953 she was victorious when the Supreme Court ruled that segregated eating facilities were unconstitutional, a major breakthrough in the civil rights movement. She also had an important role in the fight for black women´s rights.
