- Growing up as an Army brat, moving was part of my life. When I was young, moving was exciting. Before each move, my mom would get us books and pictures of the new place, turning the unknown into something to look forward to. As a teenager, moving became harder because it meant leaving friends behind. Still, when I arrived somewhere new, I learned how to adjust, make new friends, and find my place. Those experiences helped shape the independent, resilient, and positive person I am today; a daughter, wife, mother, educator, learner, and doctoral student.

- Throughout my journey in education, I saw two leaders with very different strengths and challenges. One valued relationships and wanted to be everyone's friend but struggled to create urgency and accountability. Another was strong with systems and accountability but struggled with the people side of leadership. Both believed they were leading effectively and did not fully recognize how their behaviors were affecting their staff and campus. In both cases, student performance declined. These experiences made me question why we wait for student outcomes to signal that a leader needs support.

- What I'm Trying to Find Out: From Experience to Understanding
- I come to qualitative research with experiences, observations, and questions, but I am learning that having experiences is different from researching them. Student performance data can tell us what is happening, but I want to understand more about why and how it is happening. Through this class, I want to learn how lived experiences can be studied in a meaningful and systematic way. How do leaders understand their own leadership? How do staff experience it? And what can those different perspectives teach us about providing meaningful support before student performance declines?
