  • Hello, my name is Reign Vincent. I am from the United States of America but my family is orignally from Haiti. Language has always been very important to me and has shaped who I am as a person. My first language is English, and I speak it better than any other language. But at home, ever since I was little, my family has spoken Haitian Creole. Creole has always been something I both love and sometimes struggle with. I love it because it makes me feel connected to my family. When we speak Creole, it feels like home, and it reminds me of my culture and where I come from. Even just having simple talks with my parents or family members in Creole made me feel safe and close to them. It also brought back so many happy memories of being around my family and hearing the language in everyday life.

  • Although I loved my heritage and my langauge, there was also a harder side to speaking Creole. Growing up in Miami, I sometimes felt like Haitians were looked down upon, and that made me want to keep Creole inside my house. I worried that people might judge me or make me feel like I didn’t belong because I spoke a different language. That was an uncomfortable feeling, and for a while I felt like I had to hide part of who I really was.
  • Even though I struggled with it outside the house, Creole actually helped me a lot in school. Reading and writing became easier for me because I already had another language in my mind. I learned how to sound out words better and notice patterns, and I felt like I had extra tools to help me learn.
