Presenting the story entitled How My Brother Brought Home a Wife which was written by Mr. Manuel A. Arguilla, an excellent Ilocano writer who won the first prize in the Commonweealth Literacy Contest in 1940.
The story begins when Baldo accompanies his brother Leon into fetching his wife Maria from the terminal of caratella with his beloved pet bull, Labang. When Baldo sees Maria, he is impressed by her beauty and soft feature.
On their way home, Baldo takes a sudden route change into the rocky road of Waig and surrounding fields. Leon wonders and inquires about the change of route and Baldo assures him that he is only following their father's order. The Waig route will serve as a test for Maria if she can live in the province which differs a lot from the city, but then it seems like Maria likes Leon's province.
After while, they finally reach their home and are welcomed by Leon’s mother and sister. They are smiling and excited. Leon enquiries about his father who is in his room struggling with leg disability
Baldo goes to his father to share and report the things happened in their journey. Baldo reassures him about Maria's love for Leon and commitment to their marriage. He confirms his observation that Maria is ready to embrace their house as her home.
Finally, Leon's father is feeling relief because his son found a decent woman who can accept not only him but also his family and the status they have been living with. Maria is finally feeling comfortable to interact with Leon's whole family.
