On July 3rd, 1859, John Brown arrived in Harpers Ferry with his sons Oliver, Ownen, and Jeremiah. They raised money for weapons to use in the war against slavery. They had gathered in a farmhouse, with 18 more, staying hidden and preparing to strike.

Brown concentrated on maps and met with John Cook, concealed advance man in Harpers Ferry, about the town, arsenal activities, train plans and some other data considered important to his arrangement.
On September 30 1859, Brown sent Martha and Annie back home to New York. On Sunday, October 16, Brown called his men together. Following a prayer, he illustrated his fight designs and instrucuted them,"Men get on your arms; we will continue to the Ferry."
On October 16th, Brown called his men to “proceed to Ferry.” The men took their weapons on Hall’s Island. Enslavers Lewis Washington and John Allstadt were taken hostage and the enslaved were freed.
