In the 1900s, women did not have as much rights and freedoms as they do today. Typically, the husband was head of household. Women began to long and dream of one day, gaining their own independence.
Climax
Josephine informs Mrs. Mallard of her husband´s passing. After hearing the news, Mrs. Mallard begins to sob. Her husband's death both shocks and upsets her.
Falling Action
After sobbing into her sister, Josephine's arms, Mrs. Mallard goes up to her room. Still weeping, she wanted to be alone. She would have no one follow her.
Resolution
While sobbing, Mrs. Mallard looks out the window. Blankly, she stares. Mrs. Mallard then comes to the realization that she is no longer held down by a husband, and is now free. ¨Free, free!¨ she says to herself.
While Mrs. Mallard was still upstairs, Josephine told her to open the door to her room and let her in. Mrs. Mallard told her no, and continued to bask in her newfound freedom. Meanwhile, Mr. Mallard was walking through the front door.
Josephine finally entered her room, but she was too late. Mrs. Mallard died of a heart attack. The doctors say she died from ¨joy that kills¨.
