When Laurent Clerc was around 1 years old, he fell out of his highchair onto the kitchen fireplace. He got burned on his right cheek, they later discovered that his sense of hearing and smell were damaged.
The Meeting

After graduating, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet took notice in Alice, old language less girl. After teaching Alice how to spell HAT and her own name, he enjoyed it and wanted to help others in the same situation. He thought why not start a school.
The Foundation
They enjoyed the profitable monopoly on education of the deaf in the english speaking world. They didn't want to give there monopoly for free. Gallaudet declined their offer.
First deaf school in America
Gallaudet realizedthere wasn't enough time to master everything he needed to know to teach deaf. Laurent boldly volunteered to accompanyhim to the united states to help start up the new school.
During Gallaudet's and Clerc's 51 day journeyto the united states, they taught each other FSL and french. When they got to the United States, they started raising money to start the school.
The American Asylum for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons opened on April 15th, 1817. Gallaudet and Clerc each taught classes. Alice Cogswell was the first to enroll.
