In Siena, Italy, the deceased were thrown into pits in the fundations of the old city walls. Their skeletal remains are still there today!
The Black Death then spread from Italy to France.
In Avignon, the heart of Christianity, flagellants directly challenged the authority of the church. Flagellants are people who whip themselves or others (until blood ran) in religious penance.
As well as the flagellants in penance, Jews were dragged from their homes and tortured into giving false confessions. They were later burnt at the stake.
These massacres took place in Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland.
The plague then spread from France to Plymouth, Southampton and Bristol.
In these places, peasants worked lords' estates and payed rent for their small holdings.
As the plague brought death among many poor families, surviving peasants realised the opportunities they now had.
They demanded higher wages and cheaper rents, which brought much change to the economic classes.
Lastly, there was a huge outpour of creativity in art, science, literature and architecture.
Although it was said to be the worst century to be alive, it was now the beginning of a new chapter in human history!
