- Everyday men disappear into sickness, their bodies grow thin until they vanish all together. Sounds of suffering press in every direction. Smallpox and dysentery pass along leaving us weaker. Officers watch us nonstop suffering.

- A British commander comes in and makes the same deal, "Sign on with a British ship, or stay here." Most of us stare at the floorboards, knowing that choosing to join the British would mean turning our backs on everything we've fought for. The officers don’t understand why so many of us choose death over service, but we know. We know that our freedom, even in chains, is worth more than their promises.
