- The King and Polonious determine love has not caused his insanity. Hamlet speaks aggressively and makes innuendos to Ophelia before the play. The King stops the play at the point where the nephew murders the King by pouring poison in his ear. Hamlet and Horatio, who were watching for his reaction, take this as evidence that he murdered King Hamlet. The King attempts to pray for forgiveness and Hamlet, who is also in the room, considers murdering him but decides against it because he believes that the King will go to heaven. Hamlet goes to speak to his mother, who is attempting to figure out the cause of his insanity in order to prevent him being sent to England. Hamlet berates his mother for marrying his father's brother and rashly kills Polonius, who is spying on the conversation. Then the Queen promises to keep these events secret and Hamlet goes off to hide the body.

- The murder of Polonius is covered up and Hamlet is sent to Europe, where the King sends instructions to murder him. Hamlet's ship is taken over by a pirate ship and he is the only captive. He discovers the letter and replaces it with the instructions to murder the messengers. Ophelia goes insane and recites strange poems. Laertes then approaches the throneroom with a mob to seize power, where the King talks him down by stating they should work together to murder Hamlet. Ophelia drowns in the river in her insanity. Laertes and Ponlonius plan to murder Hamlet at a fencing match, where he will be stabbed by a real sword with poison. The drink given to refresh Hamlet will also be poisoned in order to ensure that he is dead.

- Hamlet returns to Denmark. Laertes and Hamlet compete to show undying devotion for Ophelia by jumping into her grave. The King and Laertes enact their plans. The Queen dies through accidentally drinking the poisoned drink. Hamlet murders the King the twice, once with sword and once with the poison. Hamlet and Laertes murder each other with the poisoned swords in the duel. Horatio is convinced not to commit suicide and tell their story. He also gives power to Fortinbras.
