Before Gilead Serena was a far-right religious cultural activist. Serena is shown to be completely shut out of the new government planning since the new society won't let women "forget their real purpose" again

- I am the head of the house where Offred is enslaved as the Handmaid, and the husband to Serena Joy. Though i presents like a 'victim' of Gilead, i was actually involved in designing and establishing it. He somewhat has a weakness for Offred. He breaks many of Gilead's rules for her, but this is for his own personal gain. Before Gilead, myself Waterford managed a marketing agency.

- Offred is my name and i am the main protagonist of the Handmaid's Tale. i am a woman in her thirties who is forced to work as a Handmaid in the early years of the Republic of Gilead, due to the fact i am still capable of bearing children. I am forced to wear long deep red dresses to cover my whole body. When going out I must wear my wings and my bonnet. i was brough to the Rachel and Leah centre to be trained as a handmaid.
