  • You ain't exactly above suspicion yourself.
  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that Mankind is its own worst enemy. One reason/evidence for this theme is when Charlie calls out Steve as the monster could be him/anybody. (pg. 677) This could support the theme by the fact that the person helping them is called out for suspicion. As Steve said, they are all desperate to find a scapegoat. Another piece of evidence supporting the theme is when Charlie says that he didn't know Pete Van Horn was there and just wanted to find the monster. (pg. 680) This shows that Charlie just wants to find the monster and does not care about anything else affected. They are just desperate to find the monster. Lastly, the end is a shot of Maple Street with lots of fighting. (pg. 683) They are just accusing people and really have no proof. In conclusion, this story shows the theme by showing people accuse, shoot people, and accuse, with no proof/evidence. Like what Stebe said, they are desperate to find a scape goat.
