- Charlie Gordan, a 37 year old man, has an I.Q. of 68 and has been chosen to be able to go through an experimental surgery to be able to increase his intellegents. Doctors have done this experiment on many different mice, including a mouse named Algernon, and so they are hopeful that it will work on humans too. Charlie is the first person to go through this experiment.
- Climax
- Charlie underwent surgery and it was a success! Charlie's intellegents increased drastically in many different ways. He has learned many new things and is much smarter than his past self. Not only that, but his emotional/mental intellegents has also increased. 
- Rising Action 
- Charlie quits his job at the factory because all of is coworkers signed a petition for him to leave. This is because they noticed that his knowledge has increased drastically very quickly and that was odd to them.
- Resolution
- The doctors told Charlie that Algernon, the mouse, has became sick. Algernon's intellegents has decreased and he hasn't been able to do things he has done before. The worries Charlie a lot, so he decides to do extra research on the experiment to see if this will also happen to him. The doctors are not smart enough to do this research so Charlie decides to do it himself to see what will happen to him.
- After completing his research, Charlie realizes that he will become dumb again, just like Algernon did. He is already experiencing memory loss and many other things. Not only that, but Algernon dies. Because of all of this, he gets very angry at everyone and has a mental breakdown.
- Charlie goes back to his normal self, he is as dumb as he was before. He continues to go to school and doesn't remember anything from his time being smart. He I.Q. decreases drastically.
