Sir Gawain comes to King Arthur in a dream and informs him that if he fights Sir Mordred tomorrow he will die.
Throw my sword, Excalibur, into the water!
Why do that when I could keep it and sell it.
King Arthur meets with Sir Mordred trying to delay the fight. They both tell their men to be ready to fight if a sword is drawn. During the meeting, a knight draws his sword for an adder, and against King Arthur's wishes, the fighting begins.
King Arthur and Mordred fight. King Arthur stabs Mordred killing him immediately but as he stabs, Mordred does too. Although he does not die immediately, he is fatally wounded and his last two knights come to carry him away.
As Sir Lucan and Sir Bedivere carry King Arthur off of the Battlefield, Sir Lucan's guts fall out of his body and he dies because of his fatal wounds. Dying King Arthur lies on the ground and makes one final request of SIr Bedivere.
After disobeying King Arthur's orders twice, he threw the sword into the ocean. After doing this, a hand came up and took the sword and a raft of beautiful women came to get King Arthur.
The raft took King Arthur to the island of Avalon where it is thought he will heal but when Sir Bedivere goes to the island, he sees a fresh grave which he assumes King Arthur is in. Sir Bedivere spends the rest of his days praying and fasting on the island.
