Setting the scene: Reverend Hale is in the Proctors household talking to Elizabeth and John about how Elizabeth is accused of witchcraft. Hale is questioning that the Proctors worship God and tells them that their house is not a church. John mentions that they can worship God without golden candlesticks up on the altar.
