- Ignatius spent most of his early years in court. While serving in the court, Ignatius developed a taste for living a posh lifestyle. During his youth, he became addicted to gambling, dressing up, swordplay and became attracted to lovely ladies. As a young man, Ignatius always wanted to win battles, and win the hearts of beautiful ladies, especially, a royal lady of the court. But, all his dreams were shattered in the battle of Pamplona, in 1521.
- Ignatius Joined the Spanish army in 1517 but four years later in 1521, his leg got severely shattered by a cannonball in the battle of Pamplona. Because of his excellent leadership, the French were willing to carry him to the castle of Loyola where he was bedridden for the next year. While recovering at the castle of Loyola Ignatius asked the nurse for some books, and she went to collect some but she only had books about saints. Ignatius started to read these and his life changed dramatically.
- In 1539, with Peter Faber and Francis Xavier and 6 other companions, Ignatius founded the Society of Jesus in Rome. Ignatius founded the society after discovering his spiritual vocation while sitting in bed recovering from a wound caused by the Battle of Pamplona. He wrote down the Spiritual Exercises to help others follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. He formed the Jesuits to help spread the message and to teach other people about Spiritual Exercises.
