One day while returning from work, he meets his new neighbor, a teenage girl named Clarisse McClellan. Clarisse is very free-thinking, and this causes Guy to begin questioning rules and his own happiness
Guy returns home to find Mildred unconscious, as she had overdosed on sleeping medication. Two uncaring medical technicians arrive to pump Mildred's stomach and replace her blood, and then rush to the next location.
Guy notices that Clarisse had not been present in several days, and this leaves Guy worried. He asks Mildred what happened to Clarisse, and he is informed that Clarisse's family had moved away after she had died after being hit by a car 4 days prior.
Guy reveals to Mildred that he had been making a stash of books over the past year, much to Mildred's dismay. When Mildred has friends over, Guy brings out a book and begins reading a poem to them. This upsets them, and they leave being very upset at Guy.
Guy goes to someone he met years prior, Faber, as he wants him to copy the bible so he may return the original copy to the Beatty.  Faber gives Guy a radio in which he can communicate with Faber from afar.
In a standoff with Beatty, Guy burns Beatty alive. Guy runs out of the city and finds a group of runaways who have similar ideologies to Guy. The city is bombed, and the group return to the city.
