  • "Sing in me, muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending (Homer, 371).
  • Odysseus introduces the comic!

  • Everyone, as it is a long journey back to Ithaca, let us stop at that nearby island. It seems to be the city of Cicones, allies of Troy. Let us raid their things!
  • Odysseus tells his crew of a stop that they're going to make on the city of Cicones. They make this stop to steal their treasure, as the city is allies of their enemy.
  • Diapositiva: 3
  • You will pay for this! You killed 72 of our men! You better leave now!
  • Fine, I will leave. "but first my name: let that be known to you...I am Laertes Son, Odysseus" (Homer 372).
  • Diapositiva: 4
  • Come everyone, we have the best things to offer!
  • Ooooh!
  • "But those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return: they longed to stay forever, browsing on that native bloom" (Homer 373).
  • Odysseus and his men took another stop at the land of the Lotus Eaters where the inhabitants lured some of Odysseus's crew into staying at the island.
  • Diapositiva: 5
  • Dear Achaeans, we have already been through a lot. I know we are all tired. But, I see another deserted island far off, and I would like to go see what is inside. Okay, let us make our way there.
  • Odysseus and his men end up landing in the Cyclops cave.
  • Diapositiva: 6
  • Who is this?
  • Huh? Who said that?
  • The men saw a being in the cave carrying sticks, and wondered who it was.
  • Diapositiva: 7
  • After Odysseus and his men raided the city, one of the Cicone men came up to Odysseus as he was going back to the ship.
  • Grrr! Who are you?
  • AAAH! I am...Nohbody..., and me and my men come in peace.
  • I am Polyphemus, and what do you mean, peace? You aren't going to leave now!
  • The Cyclops finds Odysseus and his men, and won't let them leave! (He enclosed the entrance with a rock), He's going to eat them!
  • Diapositiva: 8
  • "I drew on all my wits, and ran through tactics...until a trick came, and it pleased me well" (Homer 381).
  • HAHAHA! TIME TO EAT MORE OF YOU!
  • Polyphemus, how about you drink this piquant wine?
  • Uh, okay. Seems tasty.
  • As Polyphemus, the Cyclops, finishes the wine, he fell asleep drunk, which was all part of Odysseus's plan.
  • Diapositiva: 9
  • Odysseus threw a burning stake at the Cyclops at just the right time so the Cyclops moved the rock so his men could get out of the cave, under some sheep.
  • Diapositiva: 10
  • Odysseus, I give you two gifts. A strong westward wind, so you can sail back to Ithaca, and a pouch of storms that you and your men should NOT open.
  • Thank you, Aeolus.
  • Aeolus gives Odysseus and his men two gifts, one of which they should not open.
  • Diapositiva: 11
  • Odysseus? We accidentally opened the storm pouch, and now we are heading to another island.
  • WHAT?!
  • Due to this new direction Odysseus's ship is being pushed to, Aeolus thinks that the ship and his men are cursed. Odysseus and his men landed briefly on the island of Laestrygones, which inhabit fierce cannibals. Now, they are making their way to the land of Aeaea, home of the goddess Circe, who some consider a witch. Some of the men, not including Odysseus, but including Eurylochus, a trusted officer of Odysseus's, went to explore Circe's land.
  • Diapositiva: 12
  • Oh hello, men! Come join me for some wine. It has a little pinch of something I added!
  • Ooooh!
  • I don't like this... I am going to go back to Odysseus and tell him that these men are falling for Circe's trap.
  • "So reassured, they all cried out together, and she came in swiftly to the shining doors to call them in. All but Eurylochus - who feared a snare" (Homer 387). Once Eurylochus was gone, Circe transformed the men that came to her into pigs!
  • Diapositiva: 13
  • AAAH! I pray to Poseidon: "O hear me, Lord, blue girdler of the islands, if I am thine indeed, and thou art father: grant that Odysseus, raider of the cities, never see his home" (Homer 384).
  • Odysseus! Circe has taken the men that you sent and put them under a spell. They are pigs now! Please, help!
  • Oh no! Don't worry, I will retrieve the men.
  • Odysseus was given a magical plant, Moly, from Hermes, the Greek Messenger, to make him immune of Circe's spell temporarily.
  • Diapositiva: 14
  • I know what you've come here for. You are to stay here for one year, and then I will let you and your men go. But, after I set you free, you must pay a visit to the Land of the Dead and listen to Tiresias. Then come back to me so I know you went.
  • Okay.
  • Once Odysseus and his men have been released, they arrived at the Land of the Dead as per Circe's agreement.
  • Diapositiva: 15
  • Okay, everyone. Calm down! I am Odysseus and "I [swear] to sacrifice a black lamb, handsomest of all our flock" (Homer 388). Does anyone know where Tiresias is?
  • GRRR! WHO IS THIS TRESSPASSER?
  • Odysseus sacrifices the lamb and many more animals, and looks for Tiresias. In the process, he encounters Elpenor, one of his men that died during Circe's encounter. Elpenor talked about his death, and asked Odysseus to find his body and conduct a proper funeral. Odysseus promises to do so. Odysseus continues looking for Tiresias (blind prophet)
  • Diapositiva: 16
  • Ah, Odysseus. You've come.
  • Yes... Is this Tiresias?
  • Yes. I have an important message to give to you. DO NOT EAT THE CATTLE! There will be consequences.
  • Okay... That makes me think of how I miss my family, and I just want to get back to Ithaca!
  • I understand. Now, you must report back to Circe.
  • Okay.
  • Odysseus goes back to Circe, who gives him advice: She says to "listen with care to this, now, and a god will arm your mind" (Homer 392). On the way back, you will encounter Sirens, Scylla, and the Charybdis. She warns him to wear earplugs and get tied to the steering wheel. Odysseus only tells his men about the Sirens because they were so worried, and this leaves them unprepared.
  • Diapositiva: 17
  • Oh it sounds so pretty! Take me to the Sirens, please!
  • No, sir.
  • Odysseus was tempted by the Sirens, but he pulled through thanks to his crew. Next up, the Scylla.
  • Diapositiva: 18
  • AAAH! THE SCYLLA TOOK SIX MEN!
  • Yum! That was some good human!
  • The Scylla ate six of Odysseus's men, one for each head! Next up, the Charybdis (a dangerous whirlpool).
  • Diapositiva: 19
  • "My men all blanched against the gloom, our eyes were fixed upon that yawning mouth in fear of being devoured" (Homer 396).
  • After the Charybdis left, the men continued on, and eventually landed at the Land of Thrinicia. At Thrinicia, the men ate cattle, which they were NOT supposed to eat.
  • Diapositiva: 20
  • I've killed all your men with this lightning. It is punishment for not following what Tiresias said.
  • Zeus struck all of Odysseus's men with lightning, so now Odysseus is on his own. Later, King Alcinous provides Odysseus with a ship, but that's a story for another time! The End!
