  • The Millionaire Tax
  • When they surpass $1,000,000, we shall send the excess to our debt payment, to help EVERY American in need!
  • Hear ye, hear ye! Millionaires have too much, and the other 99 percent too little!
  • You're... insane. I don't think that's how the economy works. What about tax evasion? And the millionaires, well...
  • Hey, but, they DO own a lot of money... don't other people need it more?
  • In 1933, Representative Wesley Lloyd of Washington proposed an amendment to the Constitution. This would limit the wealth of any American to $1,000,000 of the current gold value--the rest would pay the national debt. The amendment was likely proposed as trying to cape with the Great Depression, and it never passes, likely because of its overlooking of many possible loopholes and economic theories.

  • It just isn't. We can't afford to lose the support of the wealthy, and they would find ways around it. But I commend your effort, and don't worry, we can still help those ravaged by the depression.
  • THE ARGUMENTS
  • What do you MEAN, that isn't how the economy works?
  • Yeah... don't lose the support of the people who have the money, bub.
  • I could not find much information on whether the bill was passed to vote on at all, but it did fail. Later, FDR's policies would still pass acts to help those in need, with projects like the WPA (Work Projects Administration). The bill was likely rejected because of its bizarreness--even though it did align with socialist ideology, which was more popular at the time. Here, FDR (representing the attitude of the government at large--symbolic, not historical) tells the Representative why it won't work but also consoles him. The millionaires pledge their opposition.
