The story is told from my point of view. This helps you understand what I am going through.As an officer I am supposed to be in control.. I feel pressured by what the Burmese people expect.My power is not real. It is a performance.You can see my guilt and pressure.. You do not see things from the Burmese perspective.This shows that imperialism is a trap. It affects both the people, in power and those being controlled.

The story is about the problems between the British and the Burmese people. The person telling the story feels like they have to do what other people want them to do of doing what they think is right. This story shows how bad imperialism is, for the British and the Burmese because it makes them afraid an takes away their freedom. The British and the Burmese people are both hurt by imperialism.

This story is about people doing things they know are wrong because others are pushing them. The person telling the story shot an elephant just to save face. People still do things like this today. They do these things because they think others are watching them and they want to fit in with the crowd. Doing what others think you should do can make you feel terrible about the choices you made on.
