Extra Long Shot: shows a character in their environment. You cannot always make out the character.
Long Shot: shows a character in full, from head to toe, within their surroundings.
Medium Long Shot: shows a character from head to about the knee.
Establishing Shot: reveals when and where the action takes place. Could be an ELS, high angle or aerial shot.
A Carribean Island...
Mid Shot: shows a character from their waist up. Allows us to see gesture and facial expression or reactions.
Close up: Shows a character's head or head and shoulders. It's used to reveal emotions and reactions or if it's a close up of an object it draws our attention to it. Non doubt it will be referred to again later in the story.
