  • Starting Population
  • Variation
  • Change to Environment
  • Martens, also referred to as Martes americana, live in the wooded forests of Canada, Alaska, northern New England, the Great Lakes, and the Rocky Mountain and Sierra Nevada mountain regions. The heavy winter season provides heavy loads of snow in these areas, making it hard for Martens to move and search for berries.
  • New Competition
  • I'm hungry but I can't walk on the snow or search for food.
  • Some animals in this species possess small bare feet while others have broad feet and fur between their toes. During the spring, summer and fall seasons, both variations of feet allow Martens to navigate for berries.
  • Differential Survival
  • However during the winter season, snowfall is heavy in places like Canada and Alaska. This creates inches upon inches of snow layering atop the ground.
  • Adaption
  • The mountains of snow on the ground make circumventing the area for berries harder for Martens. The Marten with larger furry feet is able to remain warm and clasp the ground, making its way to gather the berries easier. The Marten with smaller bare feet can neither endure the cold temperatures nor grasp the ground and gather berries to survive.
  • The Marten with the large furry feet consumes much more berries and thrives in this cold climate. In contrast, the Marten with the small bare feet eventually dies since it was unable to maneuver through the snow to the berries and therefore could not ingest the food needed for survival.
  • Martens have become accustomed to the cold climate by evolving large furry paws that were proven to allow for survival. This favorable trait will be passed down to the Marten's offspring.
