These are the Burgerons. They are both mentally handicapped, just like everyone else due to the government. They once had a son, Harrison, yet Mr. and Mrs Burgeron do not remember due to their handicap.
THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal.
They were burdened with sashweightsand bags of birdshot, and their faces were masked, so that no one, seeing a free and gracefulgesture or a pretty face, would feel like something the cat drug in.
One day the Burgerons decided to watch some ballerinas dance.
Harrison Bergeron, age fourteen, she said in a grackle squawk, has just escaped from jail...
When all of a sudden, an announcment came on the television about the Burgeron's son!
Harrison Burgeron's picture appeared on the screen. He wore huge headphones and spectacles. He too was the most handicapped of all.
Harrison was later shot and killed. And because of his parents handicapped that caused them to forget things easily, they could not remember the tragedy that they just watched on the screen.
Harrison Burgeron entered the Auditorium where he claimed to be the emperor looking for his empress.
I believe the point that Kurt Vonnegut was trying to make was that it is important to be different. In a society where we all become the same, with the same choices, and the same rules to follow, we would become like all of the people in 2081. There would be no distinction between mankind. I think that Kurt was trying to show the importance that we must respect everyone's differences, but we should not become all the same. We should have different choices and distinction between us. Otherwise, we will fall into a routine of nothing different, everyday being the same.
