  • In part because of his ironic stance, Chaucer’s attitude toward women has beenthe source of constant debate among scholars. How would you characterizeChaucer’s depiction of his female characters?
  • In the general prologue, Chaucer expresses how proper the prioress is with the way she eats and how she holds herself."Ther was also a Nonne, That of hir smylyng ws ful symple and coy;In curteisie was set ful muchel hir lest."
  • "Swere and lyen, as a womman kan. A wys wyf, if that she kan hir good, Shal beren hym on honde the cow is wood, And take witnesse of hir owene mayde, Of hir assent."
  • Another prime example of Chaucer's view of women is the Wife from Bath, she is portrayed as a domineering woman who gets away with everything she wants by manipulating and controlling her husbands. Chaucer clearly holds higher standards to the nun because she is chaste and makes all women seem to want the same thing. He generalizes all of women in a misogynistic manner.
