The main characters in each story have many parallels and are interconnected even through different times and places. In this activity, students will create a Venn diagram that compares and contrasts three characters. Students will add images and words to represent the characters, their experiences, personalities and interests. Using the outer portions of the ovals, they can identify traits, experiences and attributes that are singular to the character and in the overlapping portions, they can list the ways in which the characters are the same. To scaffold, teachers may ask students to focus on only two characters, and the Venn diagram can be adjusted accordingly.

Due Date:
Objective: Create a Venn Diagram comparing the characters from the book.
Student Instructions:
Requirements:
Encourage active participation by inviting students to share their Venn diagrams and explain their reasoning. Prompt respectful dialogue and ask follow-up questions to deepen understanding of each character’s traits and motivations.
Let students know what you expect when they present—such as referring to specific evidence from the book and listening attentively to peers. Clarifying expectations helps all students feel comfortable contributing.
Ask students to relate character traits or situations to their own lives. Personal connections make the discussion more meaningful and memorable.
Wrap up by highlighting major similarities and differences identified during the discussion. Invite students to reflect on how comparing characters helps them understand the story more deeply.
Students can compare and contrast characters in 'Echo' by creating a Venn diagram that highlights each character's unique traits and shared qualities. Place differences in the outer sections and similarities in the overlapping center. Adding images and descriptive words helps visualize experiences and personalities.
Effective strategies include using graphic organizers like Venn diagrams, discussing character traits, and providing sentence starters. Encouraging students to use images and specific examples from the text makes the analysis more engaging and accessible.
Include names, images, character traits, experiences, interests, and descriptive words for each character. List similarities in the overlapping section, and differences on the sides. Visual elements, like scenes or attribute icons, enhance understanding.
Teachers can scaffold by starting with two characters for simpler comparisons, then adding a third character as students gain confidence. Adjust the Venn diagram accordingly and guide students to focus first on clear similarities and differences.
Comparing and contrasting characters helps students develop higher-order thinking, improves reading comprehension, and deepens their understanding of themes and character development in literature like 'Echo'.
