Character maps are a helpful tool for students to use as they're reading, although they can also be used after completing a book. In this activity, students will create a character map of the characters in The Wish Giver, paying close attention to the physical attributes, and the traits of both major and minor characters. They can also provide detailed information regarding the challenges the character faces, the challenges the character imposes, and the importance of the character to the plot of the story.

Due Date:
Objective: Create a character map for the characters in The Wish Giver.
Student Instructions:
Encourage students to share their thoughts on key character choices and their consequences. Class discussions help deepen understanding and allow students to connect their character maps to real-world decision making.
Craft questions such as, “Why do you think this character made that wish?” or “What might happen if they chose differently?” These open-ended prompts spark meaningful conversation and critical thinking.
Divide your class into groups of 3–4. This small group setting makes it easier for all students to participate and express their ideas about characters’ actions.
After small group talks, invite each group to present their main takeaways. This sharing step builds confidence and lets students compare different perspectives on character decisions.
Ask students to reflect on times when they faced tough decisions, just like the characters. Relating literature to life makes lessons more relevant and memorable for kids.
