- Scene 1Setting: Adam's houseCharacters: Noah and AdamThe story opens with Noah and Adam in Adam's room, packing up all of his belongings into boxes and loading them into the car. Noah is very upset about Adam moving and is nearly in tears. Adam's famliy is downstairs, giving them space in order to talk things out. Adam is also upset, he is leaving due to a family emergency in another state, his family is moving in with his grandma who had been living alone but is unable to anymore because she is ill. The room looks bare now, all of the posters ripped off the walls and the shelves empty of the trophies and medals that used to sit there.

- Scene 2:Setting: Noah's english classroomCharacters: Noah, Mrs. DanielsThis is Noah's first day of senior year and first day of school without Adam. In his classroom there is only one empty desk, the one next to Noah. He keeps looking at it throughout the day. His first period is english, this is where hee first meets Mrs. Daniels. Inspirational posters cover the walls and there's a bright colorful rug under his feet. Mrs. Daniels makes everybody in the room go around and say their name, favorite book, and the last time they wrote anything by choice. Noah is annoyed and quietly states that he doesn't write and hasn't read a book in ages, he's upset he's alone starting senior year.

- Scene 3:Setting: Noah's English classroomCharacters: Noah, Mrs. Daniels, SophieNow, in Adam's seat that was empty, there's a new girl, Sophie, who just transferred in. Noah is even more upset to see someone has filled his seat, which causes him to hide even more in his seat and pushes him further away from wanting to make friends. Mrs. Daniels starts to sense that something might be upsetting Noah, and tries to get him to talk to Sophie and other students through group projects.
