Upton Sinclair was a novelistforsocialism, health, temperance, free speech, and worker rights. He was born inBaltimore, New Jersey in 1878. His parents were poor but his grandparents were wealthy,that's what made him notice the twoextremes of society.
He graduated in New York in 1897 and did graduate work in Columbia University.He published his first 4 books which received critics but did not sell well.

There was meat on the floor, in the dirt where the workers had tramped and spit uncounted billions of consumption germs. There would be meat stored in piles in rooms, and the water from leaky roofs would drip over it, and thousands of rats would race about on it.
This was the result of a seven-week investigation, The Jungle, first published in serial form by Appeal to Reason in 1905 and became a best seller, exposed real-life conditions in meatpacking plants to a horrified public.
