After the loss of her mother, Gemma is sentía prestigious all girls boarding school in London, Spence Academy for girls.
While at Spence, she befriended three other girls. Felicity, Pippa, and Ann.
The four friends soon discover a diary from 16 year old Mary down. Mary also had visions similar to visions Gemma was currently having.
The diary tells them about an ancient groups called “the Order” women of the order possessed the power to open the doors from the human world to other realms. They can pass people from the human world to the afterlife. The girls decide to create their own order, and Gemma believes her visions are connected to this order. The women of this order can also create remarkable illusions.

They find that the order was actually at Spence, and that the members were Mary down Sarah Rees - Thoome, and the original headmistress, Eugenia Spence. She then finds out her mother was Mary Dowd, and her best friend Sarah Rees - Thoome, is Circe, who is trying to take over the realms.

Eventually, Gemma has to fight off the creature that killed her mother, and by the time Gemma wins the fight, Pippa has decided to stay in the realms, for she has found true love, and doesn’t want to Mary the man her parents wish for her.
