  • When I learned to read, my whole world changed. Every word showed me more clearly just how unjust slavery truly was.
  • As Frederick learned how to read, he became aware of the injustice of slavery through the reading materials he was exposed to, as each new word he learned added to his sense of awareness of the horrible acts of inhumanity that were being committed all around him.

  • The more I understood, the more I suffered. Knowing the truth of my condition filled me with anguish—but it also sparked a powerful desire for freedom.
  • The knowledge he gained from reading caused Frederick a great deal of suffering, as he began to see the horrible cruelty of slave owners, as well as to feel the horrible pain of the slavery in his life.

  • Frederick also developed a strong longing for freedom as a result of this information, which was supported by some of his companions cautiously optimistic encouragement. Frederick held to the hope that he would one day flee to the North. Hope gave him the bravery to act, while literacy helped him see.
  • Two Irish workers once told me I should run away. Their words stayed with me, and I held tightly to the hope that one day I would reach freedom in the North.
