Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door— Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door;— This it is and nothing more.” (Line 16-18).
"Lenore"(Line 29).
The poem begins on a dark, dreary night. The narrator is almost asleep when he hears a tapping at his door. "While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping" (Line 3).
The narrator gets up to see where the sound is coming from. He then hears the rustling of the purple chamber curtains. Yet still he believes it is just some visitor. "Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door"(Line 16.)
“Other friends have flown before—On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before.” (Lines 48-49).
"Nevermore"
The narrator opens his door to see who was tapping, but finds nothing but darkness. " Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing"(Line 25). The narrator then dares to call out the name of his wife, Lenore.
"Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! Leave my loneliness unbroken!—quit the bust above my door! Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!” (Lines 88-90.)
"Nevermore"(Line 91).
Just as the narrator is about to give up on whatever is making the tapping sound he hears it again. "Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter, In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore"(Lines 37-38). The raven begins to repeat and repeat the word "Nevermore."
"Nevermore"(Line 38).
The raven continued to only utter the word "Nevermore." The narrator begins to grow attached to the bird but knows just like everyone else it will soon leave him too.
The narrator begins to become upset with the raven. He begins to curse the bird and beg for it to leave. However, despite his wishes the raven never leaves. "And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sittingOn the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door" (Lines 92-93).
