- Stanhope and Raleigh first meet in the play. Stanhope doesn't seem to be very impressed about Raleigh arrival, there is tension and awkwardness.Hibbert returns from duty, suffering neuralgia.
- Stanhope talks with Osborne about Hibbert and how he is feeling about Raleigh arrival. He tells he will censore all his letters so Raleigh's sister doesn't get to know about his drinking problems.
- This is not fair why did Raleigh had to come to my company.
- Stanhope is drunk and Osborne puts him to sleep. He is concerned about Stanhope. Osborne stands besides him and watches him for a moment.
- I'm concerned for him, he works too much and drinks too much.
