- Mathilde and her husband are invited to a party. But Mathilde is upset and her husband is confused as to why. This was because she has no dress so her husband gives her 400 francs so that she can buy a dress.
- Climax
- Mathilde was able to buy a dress however she has no jewelry. So she then goes to her friend Madame Forestier for jewelry. Mathilde tries on multiple necklaces before asking to wear the diamond necklace and her friend allows her to burrow it.
- Falling Action
- After getting a dress and a beautiful necklace Mathilde and her husband go to the ball. At the ball Mathilde is in the spotlight and is having a great time.
- Resolution
- As Mathilde and her husband are leaving her husband offers her his coat. But she denies the offer because she doesn't want to be seen in his shabby coat. But as Mathilde gets home and looks in the mirror she realizes the necklace is gone.
- After telling her husband that she lost the necklace Mathilde sends a letter to her friend to tell her that the clasp on the necklace broke. This gives them time to earn money and buy a new diamond necklace. However this causes them to go into debt
- After finally being able to pay of their debt Mathilde goes out and sees her friend Madame Forestier. She then decides to come clear and tell her friend what happened. Her friend is shocked and says that the necklace was fake. Now Mathilde is shocked.
- The necklace was fake
