Cause
The beginning of WWI brought many countries into a war they didn’t want to be in, like Germany, but Germany had a plan. The Germans were focused on getting unrestricted submarine warfare to use in the war. They had already been using them, sinking things like supply ships for allied powers and even just passenger ships. These passenger ships and supply ships came from the U.S. so the Germans got another idea, they decided to make Mexico go into war with the U.S., so the Allied powers wouldn’t get the supplies fast enough. They told Mexico that they would help them reclaim their land, but it was really just to get Mexico a part of the German cause.

Effect
The British intercepted the Zimmerman telegram that was supposed to go to the German ambassador in Mexico, and when the word got to America, the whole country went into a panic. During this confrontation, the American government decided that it was time for them to drop their ways of being neutral in hard situations and decided to join the Allied powers and help France and Britain win the war against Germany.
