In 1764 British passed a law that the colonists needed to pay taxes for the Sugar and tea that they were receiving from England. They also had to pay the king taxes for the protection they didn't want from the English soldiers.The reason the protection was their was because of the French-Indian war.

In 1667 the British passed the Townshend act which said that the colonists had taxes on everything. Everything the colonists but would have a tax. Colonists boycotted and stopped buying things and that made the british lose money. that same year it was canceled, no more taxes except for the tea.
