  • Slidkalniņš: 1
  • Hut, hut, hut
  • They march so proper, which is kind of weird.
  • Yanek, a Jewish boy from Krakow, Poland, is walking down the street to see the nazis walking down the street as well. Yanek is amazed on how the Nazis walk and is a little scared he explains this when he says, "They marched in their smart gray uniforms...It was silly, but eerie at the same time" (page 7). This shows the fear Yanek might have had when seeing the nazis.
  • Slidkalniņš: 2
  • I hope Yanek is safe!
  • Is that my mom and dad? I hope not!
  • Hurry it up!
  • In this Yanek is on the streets of his hometown when he sees nazis, with Jewish people following them somewhere. He hides so that the nazis will not try to take him, and while he is hiding, he sees what he thinks is his parents. This is seen in the book when Yanek says, "Was that my mother and father?" This shows us once again that Yanek thinks he sees his mother and father being taken away by the nazis. This will affect Yanek the rest of his life because his mother and father were very important figures to him.
