Miami in the 1960s-1980s
Miami in the 1960s was the new home of many Cubans who had fled their home island after many years of violent revolution. The Cold War had claimed another nation's stability, but yet the Cuban refugees still lived on despite their unfortunate circumstances. This would continue for decades as more refugees would arrive to the US, most notably in the 80s due to further escalation of the Castro Regime.

I miss mi Mama y mi Papa, but I cannot return. Not while Castro still rules..
Ignacio Cardenas fled Cuba in the 50s, as he did not like Castro and immediately felt fear at how bloody his regime is. He fled but unfortunately he could not take his parents, as they did not want to leave their home behind, but they blessed his departure, hoping he would have a better life. Having arrived in Miami, he managed to get a job at a factory, not his ideal job as he wished to be a Lawyer, but life and the Cold War upheaved his hopes. He wishes to bring his parents to Miami one day to reunite with them and be safe from the regime.

Remembering.
This night for Ignacio was a night like many others. As he fell asleep from his tiring day at the factory, Ignacio began to remember that fateful day he fled Cuba. The he last saw his parents, not knowing when he will see them again.

Departure.
On a rainy day, Ignacio decided to make his escape, his friend who had fled before him had managed to get a fishing boat through his connections in Miami to help him escape. And so, on a rainy spring day, Ignacio fled but his parents followed him up to the point where he would be picked, as they were not sure when they would all be together again. This rainy day haunts Ignacio very often in his dreams.

The Strait.
The journey across the Floridian Strait was a perilous one, as a storm hit and Ignacio and the boat crew were stuck at sea for far longer than they hoped. For days Ignacio would ponder if his decision was a foolish one, he would think to himself he should have stayed home and bared through Castro's regime, since at least he would still have his parents with him, not alone and scared in the middle of nowhere. But his resolve at no point did it ever fully leave him, as deep down he knew soon he would make it to a new land, one that would bring him hope and prosperity.

Arrival
Finally, Ignacio had arrived in Miami, his nightmare would end, both the one he lived through and the one he sees in his sleep. Though his English was limited, he had taken lessons back home before Castro turned it all upside down, and his hope remained intact. In this land that had once sheltered his ancestors before him, he too made the same journey, and now his new journey began. "Reunite my family, and be all together again."

Reflection and Assurance
Soon we will all be together again
Every time Ignacio has had this nightmare he would struggle to get up in the morning, but this time it was different. It had been a couple of decades since his escape, and many years of wondering if he would ever see his parents again and on this day, he would get to see his beloved parents again.

Connection to reality
Ignacio's story reflects what many refugees felt when they arrived in the US in the 60s, he left his family behind to work a job he did not want but needed to make ends meet. It was not glamourous but it helped him survive, like many others did as well. His family arriving in what would now be around the 80s reflects the further arrivals from Cuba, and his family now poor as a result of Castro's decades of rule has left them destitute and only now barely able to escape, not when they initially had the chance to do so.

Reunited at last
The Cardenas family never lost hope in reuniting despite how long it had been. Ignacio's hope never faded and neither did his parents, and this hope is the same one many refugees had, and the same hope that kept them united during such a trying period.
