  • This started the conflict known as the Wakarusa war, named by the near by river.
  • Hello, today I will be informing you about the Wakarusa war. The violence began outside of Lawrence, a free-state town in Douglas county. A pro-slavery settler killed a free-stater, Charles Dow in a argue over land.
  • Shortly after the killing, free-staters gathered in Lawrence to plot revenge for Dow. At the time, the territorial government of Kansas was pro-slavery, and officials were critical of the free-state press in Lawrence. Sheriff Samuel Jones was a southern sympathizer. He gathered a group of Missourians and headed toward Lawrence, camping six miles from town.
  • They created a blockade of Lawrence, blocking supplies from reaching town. Some Lawrence residents managed to get supplies through the blockade. Two women carrying ammunition got through by sewing bullets into their petticoats. The women were so weighted down down that when they reached Lawrence they had to be carried out of their carriage.
