  • Late on 12/16/1773, in response to The Tea Act, where colonists could only purchase British tea an anti-British group known as the "Sons of Liberty" dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor.

  • The Intolerable Acts: After the Boston Tea Party, Great Britain responded by closing Boston ports which affected merchants who relied on trade. British soldiers were also sent to monitor Boston.

  • In July of 1776, each colony sent delegates to gather in Philadelphia for the Second Continental Congress. Thomas Jefferson had drafted a "Declaration of Independence", basing it off of enlightenment thinker; John Locke's ideas. After revising this document, each member of the Continental Congress signed it in August of 1776.
