  • Take their territory. Kill them all. We are superior to them.

  • Mountain men were admired as rugged individualists, people who follow their own independent course in life. Even their colorful appearance set them apart from ordinary society. Their shirts and trousers were made of animal hides and decorated with porcupine quills. Their hair reached to their shoulders. Pistols and tomahawks hung from their belts. Mountain men could make profit selling their furs.
  • Mexican-American War
  • Texas chose us over you, Mexico.
  • Most pioneer families started the journey with a large amount of gear. As they crossed rivers and scaled mountains, they discarded belongings to lighten their wagons. The trail west held many dangers. During the spring, travelers risked drowning as they floated their wagons across rivers. In summer, they faced blistering heat on the treeless plains. Early snows could block passes through the mountains. Getting the heavy wagons past these obstacles was hard work. The biggest threat was sickness. Diseases spread quickly because the wagons where so close together.
  • Mormons in Utah
  • Americans who believed in Manifest Destiny thought that expansion would also open new opportunities for the United States economy. Manifest Destiny had a negative side. Many white Americans believed that they were superior to Native Americans and Mexicans. They used this belief to justify taking lands belonging to people whom they considered inferior.
  • California Gold Rush
  • Texas wanted to join the US as a state but the US refused because the US knew it would cause conflict with Mexico. When Texas said that it would join Britain, the US had to take Texas because they did not want Britain getting any more land near the US. This caused the Mexican-American War.
  • ATTACK! The US took Texas away from us.
  • Mormons are members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They believed a man could have more than 1 wife, and they believed property should be owned in common. 
  • We love Jesus.
  • John Sutter finds gold in California and word spreads out to San Francisco. People from the US, Europe, China, Australia, and South America rush to California to get rich from finding gold.
  • I have found no gold.
  • Look at all the gold I have found.
