When Silvey was cleaning the shop, a tall, skinny, boy named Sunny had walked in and asked Silvey if she wanted to go to the pictures with him, No, thanks Silvey said. Perhaps another time Sunny said as he walked out.

After Chinese school, three Chinese-American troops named Tom, Wayne, and Harry who recently arrived in Auckland came into the shop.They said they were US Army GIs of the 43rd New England Division, who were very nice and fun to talk with. Ma then asked if they would like to stay for dinner, they said yes Please.
After the American troops have been with Silvey and her family for a month, they had to leave to fight in the war, they were all very sad especially Silvey. Sunny came in tonight and told Silvey that he would miss her when her leaves and then asked Silvey, he wanted to marry her. Silvey said no and that she was to young to be married, Sunny when left. On Christmas day Silvey and her siblings each got a present from Tom, Wayne, and Harry. Each present was filled with Bubble gum, a bar of chocolate, and a bottle of coca cola. Silvey felt sad thinking about the troops.
