  • The Iron Curtain speech created by Winston Churchill spoke of the separation of Germany and rise of communism in the US. This speech increased tension between the US and Soviet Union.
  • Korean War
  • The United Nations was an organization built to settle disputes without war or violence. Although it was meant to prevent war, the initiative failed.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis
  • Soviets responded by preventing the US from sending food and supplies to West Berlin because they did not support communism. The blockade airlift took effect to send supplies and food through air to West Berlin from the US.
  • Naval Blockade of Cuba
  • This invasion was a proxy war backed by the Soviets in attack to South Korea which was backed by the US. In response, the US helped South Korea and ended in neutral agreement with the North.
  • Soviets had installed nuclear weapons in Cuba that they were planning on using as an attack against the US. The US spy planes had photographed them and also set up weapons in case of a nuclear war.
  • Kennedy decided to quarantine his ships around Cuba so there wouldn't be nuclear war, and to prevent the Soviets from bringing in more military weapons. Eventually the US and Soviets made an agreement to withdraw their missiles.
