  • The Landlady is asking Billy to sign the booklet in the sitting room.'“Very well, then. I’ll leave you now sothat you can unpack. But before you go tobed, would you be kind enough to pop into the sitting-room on the ground floor andsign the book? Everyone has to do thatbecause it’s the law of the land, and wedon’t want to go breaking any laws at thisstage in the proceedings, do we?” Shegave him a little wave of the hand andwent quickly out of the room and closedthe door.'
  • Billy is writing his name in the booklet and sees the other names. He found the guest-book lying open on thepiano, so he took out his pen and wrote downhis name and address. There were only twoother entries above his on the page, and, asone always does with guest-books, he startedto read them. One was a Christopher Mulholland from Cardiff. The other was Gregory W. Temple from Bristol.'
  • Billy and the land lady start to talk about the other two boys who were staying there.'“Gregory Temple?” he said aloud, searching his memory. “ChristopherMulholland? …” “Such charming boys,” a voice behind himanswered, and he turned and saw hislandlady sailing into the room with a largesilver tea-tray in her hands.' . . . '“They sound somehow familiar,” he said. “They do? How interesting.”'
  • Billy begins to become wary of the Landladdy due to her saying that there were two other tenants there but, no signs of them and the tea he was drinking tasted like bitter almonds which is a sign of something containing the poison known as cyanide.
