  • After Texas gained its independence from Mexico in April of 1836, they realized that self-governance came with its own challenges, and deemed it necessary to join a bigger nation: The USA! However, American political leaders, such as President Polk, were worried about adding another slave state to the US, delaying the Texas Annexation.

  • The Oregon Trade sprouted from the dilemma of which country, America or Great Britain, should own the territory that is now known as Oregon. Many scholars speculate that Britain chose to give up the territory to maintain peace with the US, and in doing so, political leaders felt assured that adding Oregon (a free state) could balance the affects of annexing Texas (a slave state).

  • So, on December 29, 1845, Texas was officially annexed by the leaders of the time. The Americans felt strongly about the "Manifest Destiny" ideology, and believed that annexing Texas was another step of destined expansion.
