- When Ben was 8 years old his dad started to be away from home for longer periods of time. His parents soon got a divorce.
- One day Ben went to church and after hearing a story by the preacher he wanted to become a missionary doctor.
- When Sonya Carson (Ben's mom) was struggling to pay the bills they moved to Boston, Massachusetts to live with her sister and brother in law
- The first Christmas in Boston was magical because the children got many presents from their relatives.
- By 5th Grade his family moved back to Detroit. In a new school Ben and his brother realized that they were not as smart as their classmates. Three things helped them to catch up.
- After an eye test in school Ben knew that his eyesight was weak. His focus improved when he started to wear glasses
- His mother stopped them from watching TV and encouraged them to read. She explained to them that the rich people she worked for did not watch TV but read a lot of books. They also worked very hard.
- So Ben worked hard. By the time he was in High School he had also faced racism. His 9th grade sports teacher deliberately gave him a B instead of an A so that he could not finish his streak of getting As
- When Ben was 14, he started having trouble with his temper. One day after he almost stabbed his best friend for a minor thing, He prayed hard to God to teach him patience. He felt that God spoke to him through the Bible. So he read the Bible and prayed every day. Ben never lost his temper again.

- Ben joined the Reserve Officers' Training Corps in year 10. After many challenges, Ben was finally the Colonel of ROTC in his junior year. He was also offered a full scholarship to West Point. Ben wanted to become a physician.
- He joined Yale and became a gifted Pediatric neurosurgeon. Currently he is United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
- Lessons that I have learnt from the book are to always be thankful for what you have and also to persevere when faced with challenges.
